If the slope isn t set up right originally or the gutters have sagged over time either due to aging of the home or being too full of debris water pools in the gutter. The pitch of gutter heading towards a downspout can also cause overflow if it s too steep. If the gutters look clear run a hose and fill the gutters with water. If the gutter is clogged some of that water will back up on the roof soaking it.

Gutters are supposed to direct water away from your roof and into the ground. Over time rain gutters often start to pull away from the roof allowing water to drip over the gutter sides or between the gutters and the walls. Same goes for lack of pitch which causes the water to gather in one spot rather than flowing toward an exit. You can often clear these by spraying water from a garden hose directly into the downspouts.

If the gutter is tilting away from your house it could be causing an overflow particularly during heavy storms. If the gutters are clogged it s possible that the water is overflowing the gutters and this is contributing to the leak. This can be frustrating and also creates a dangerous situation on porch steps during freez. Usually this is due to gutter fasteners rusting.

If water is dripping behind your gutter it s probably because it was installed without any flashing over the back of the gutter. And it doesn t stop there. A gutter apron is a bent piece of flashing that tucks up under the shingles and over the gutter. If you notice a clog in the gutter you should be able to easily remove the offending debris by hand.

Home centers sell a gutter apron in 10 ft. Some of the water may leak behind the gutters down towards the soffit and the fascia. When the roof shingles do not extend past the metal drip edge the water will suck back on the metal drip edge this is called capillary action and run behind your gutters. The gutter apron will prevent the dripping.

Some gutter backups are caused by blockages in the downspouts.
